From Waste to Wealth: Inspiring a Greener Tomorrow

I am Favour Ojieh, a chemical scientist and the founder of VOCA (Voice of Climate Action). Growing up in Obiaruku, Delta State, Nigeria, surrounded by lush green landscapes and natural beauty, I developed an innate love for the environment. However, it wasn’t until my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year in Bayelsa, where I was assigned to the Ministry of Environment, that this love transformed into purpose.

I vividly remember the day a devastating flood swept through my apartment. It was a wake-up call that underscored the vulnerability of our communities to environmental challenges. My director, Mr. Ere Wakedei, introduced me to environmental meetings, including one with Terra Global. These experiences opened my eyes to the urgent need for climate action, especially at the grassroots level.

Fueled by passion and a desire to create change, I embarked on a journey to find solutions. My research into recycling began with a simple yet impactful idea: addressing plastic waste. I envisioned transforming what many discarded as useless into something valuable. After approximately 20 months of experiments — some of which ended in failure — I finally succeeded in creating VOCA Shoe Polish, a product made from recycled plastic waste. This achievement wasn’t just about producing shoe polish; it was about demonstrating that waste could indeed become wealth.

The journey, however, was far from easy. Financial constraints were a constant challenge. I invested my NYSC savings into the project and, when that wasn’t enough, sought help from my family. Their unwavering support kept me going despite the uncertainties. Failure became my greatest teacher, and each setback strengthened my determination to find solutions.

Beyond funding and experimentation, raising awareness about environmental issues proved to be another uphill battle. Convincing people to adopt sustainable practices in a world driven by convenience felt like shouting into the void. Yet, I held on to my vision of making environmentalism both accessible and practical.

Today, VOCA Shoe Polish is more than a product; it’s a movement. It stands as a testament to the fact that sustainable solutions are within our reach when we dare to think differently. In addition to VOCA Shoe Polish, I have expanded my efforts by educating others and authoring a book titled The Wealth in Waste: How Recycling Can Save the Planet. Through this platform, I teach young people how to turn waste into fashionable bags and footwear, promoting eco-friendly and affordable fashion. This initiative has engaged and empowered many youths, providing them with practical skills and a sense of purpose.

Despite these achievements, challenges persist. Securing funding for larger-scale projects and spreading this message globally remains a work in progress. However, I draw strength from the lives I’ve touched and the growing realization that small actions can create big changes.

To anyone facing obstacles, my story serves as a reminder: our environment is our responsibility. We have the power to innovate, create, and inspire. Even when the odds are stacked against us, persistence can turn dreams into reality. Together, let us transform our communities, one solution at a time.
