Sylvia Tamale: A Trailblazer in Feminism, Ecofeminism & Decolonisation
Ugandan scholar, lawyer, feminist and academic Prof. Sylvia Rosila Tamale is one of Africa’s most powerful intellectual voices on gender justice, sexuality, law and the deep-rooted legacies of colonialism. Her work bridges academic theory and grassroots activism , pushing for inclusive feminist politics across the African continent and beyond. Born and educated in Uganda, Tamale’s academic journey has taken her from Makerere University to Harvard Law School and the University of Minnesota , where she completed a PhD in sociology and feminist studies. She has been a visiting professor and scholar at institutions like the University of Cape Town and the University of Wisconsin, and served as the first woman Dean of the Faculty of Law at Makerere University.
