Voices from the Delta: Ecofem Tales Summit for Riverine Women 2025 Now Featured in Our Impact Report
Now documented in the Foundation’s 2025 Impact Report, the initiative highlights a powerful interview-based environmental engagement conducted in Gbaraun, a riverine community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, located in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region.
Centering the Voices of Riverine Women
At the heart of the engagement was a qualitative focus group discussion designed to amplify the environmental realities faced by women whose livelihoods are directly connected to land and water.
Twenty women from the community participated in the session, representing a cross-section of local life and leadership. Participants included:
-
Traders
-
Women farmers
-
Fisherwomen
-
Women chiefs
The discussions were held in the community market square, a familiar and culturally significant gathering space. This setting helped create a safe and open environment where women could speak freely about their experiences.
Storytelling as Environmental Evidence
Using an interview-based format, participants shared their stories in their own words and local language. This approach allowed for authentic expression of how oil exploration and environmental degradation have shaped their daily lives.
The conversations revealed themes such as:
-
Ecological loss affecting fishing and farming activities
-
Disruption of livelihoods tied to polluted waters and damaged ecosystems
-
Gendered vulnerabilities, particularly the disproportionate burden placed on women in sustaining households and local economies
By prioritizing storytelling and lived experiences, the engagement moved beyond statistics to capture the human dimension of environmental injustice in the Niger Delta.
Building a Platform for Collective Reflection
The session evolved into more than a discussion, it became a collective moment of reflection and solidarity among women who share similar environmental challenges.
Through this community-centered approach, Ecofem Tales created a culturally grounded platform for documenting grassroots environmental realities. The process also reinforced the importance of local knowledge in shaping conversations around sustainability, environmental protection, and community resilience.
From Community Voices to Policy Dialogue
Insights from the engagement now contribute to the Ecofem Tales Environmental Foundation 2025 Impact Report, providing valuable qualitative evidence that can support:
-
Policy dialogue on environmental justice
-
Community-led environmental action
-
Future Ecofem Tales programs and advocacy initiatives
Most importantly, the engagement reaffirmed Ecofem Tales’ mission to center women’s voices in environmental advocacy, ensuring that those most affected by ecological degradation are part of the conversations shaping solutions.
Looking Ahead
The stories shared in Gbaraun remind us that environmental challenges in riverine communities are not just ecological, they are social, economic, and deeply human.
By documenting these experiences, Ecofem Tales continues to build a growing archive of grassroots environmental narratives, strengthening the call for equitable and sustainable change in the Niger Delta and beyond.
