EcoChampion in Action: Temilade Salami

Temilade Salami, also known as Global Temi, is a distinguished Nigerian environmentalist, climate education advocate, and marine biologist. With over four years of experience leading youth-driven environmental sustainability initiatives across Nigeria, she has made significant strides in promoting ecological awareness and action.

Temilade's passion for the environment was evident early in her life. She pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science from the University of Lagos between 2014 and 2018. Her academic journey continued at the University of Sussex, where she earned a Master’s degree in Environment, Development, and Policy. This advanced education equipped her with a comprehensive understanding of environmental challenges and solutions.

In 2018, Temilade founded EcoChampions, a youth-led organization dedicated to bridging the climate education gap in Africa. Under her leadership as Executive Director, EcoChampions has become one of Africa's largest networks of young environmentalists and activists. The organization focuses on climate education, leadership, and advocacy, empowering over 200 young environmentalists across 26 African countries. Through various programs and projects, EcoChampions supports the integration of climate education into educational systems, aiming to foster a generation of environmentally conscious individuals.

Temilade's commitment to environmental education led her to author two illustrated environmental books for children, aiming to bridge the climate education gap in Africa. Recognizing the importance of early education, she believes that informing children about environmental stewardship from a young age enables them to make informed decisions as they grow.

In early 2022, she launched the Climate Education Leaders Fellowship in Africa, a program that combines knowledge, expertise, and mentorship to prepare and educate the next generation of climate leaders and activists. This initiative reflects her dedication to scaling climate education to meet the pressing needs of our world.

Temilade's impactful work has garnered several accolades:

  • 2020 Nigeria's 25 Under 25 Leader on Energy and Sustainability: Honored for her contributions to sustainable energy and environmental practices.
  • 2018 LASEPA Ambassador against Noise Pollution: Recognized by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency for her advocacy against noise pollution.
  • 2018 Idea Hub Africa Talent of the Future: Acknowledged for her innovative approaches to environmental challenges.
  • 2018 US Consulate’s Carrington Youth Fellow: Selected for her leadership and commitment to community service.

Beyond her organizational roles, Temilade is an active member of the UNESCO SDG4YOUTH Network and serves as a World Bank Global Partnership for Education Youth Leader. In these capacities, she collaborates on developing guidelines to assist policymakers in incorporating climate education into curricula, emphasizing that education is vital for advancing climate action.

Temilade Salami's journey exemplifies the profound impact of dedicated environmental advocacy. Through her leadership, educational initiatives, and unwavering commitment, she continues to inspire and mobilize young environmentalists across Africa, fostering a culture of sustainability and ecological responsibility.
