We are pleased to announce the 1st Ecofeminism and Environmental Ethics Conference in Nigeria, the Ecofem International Conference (EIC) 2027.

Conference Theme: Decolonizing Ecofeminism: Knowledge, Justice and Sustainable Environmental Futures

The Ecofem International Conference 2027 provides a multidisciplinary and applied philosophy platform for examining the ethical, political, social, and practical questions arising from the interconnected crises of environmental degradation, climate change, resource extraction, biodiversity loss, pollution, and ecological displacement.

The conference is particularly concerned with how philosophical inquiry can move beyond abstract theorising toward practical responses to environmental injustice. It invites critical reflection on questions of justice, responsibility, power, knowledge, care, sustainability, human–nature relationships, and the conditions necessary for equitable environmental futures.

At the centre of the conference is a critical engagement with ecofeminism and environmental ethics from African and Global South perspectives. The conference seeks to examine how dominant philosophical and environmental frameworks have shaped understandings of nature, gender, development, and justice, while creating space for Indigenous, local, embodied, feminist, and community-based forms of knowledge.

Key Questions

The conference will explore questions such as:

·         What does environmental justice require in contexts shaped by colonialism, extractivism, poverty, and unequal development?

·         How can ecofeminist philosophy contribute to practical responses to contemporary environmental crises?

·         Whose knowledge counts in environmental decision-making, and what are the ethical consequences of excluding Indigenous and local knowledge?

·         How should responsibility for environmental harm be understood across individuals, corporations, governments, and communities?

·         What ethical obligations do present generations have toward future generations and the more-than-human world?

·         How can philosophical scholarship contribute to environmental policy, activism, community practice, and institutional change?

·         What might a decolonized approach to environmental ethics and ecofeminism look like in Africa and the wider Global South?

The conference particularly welcomes contributions that connect philosophical reflection with real-world environmental problems, policy questions, community experiences, artistic and literary practices, activism, and pathways toward social and ecological transformation.

Who Should Attend?

EIC 2027 welcomes philosophers, academics, researchers, postgraduate and undergraduate students, environmental practitioners, policymakers, NGO representatives, activists, community leaders, artists, writers, and other professionals working on questions relating to environmental ethics, ecofeminism, climate justice, sustainability, and environmental practice.

The conference will create opportunities for critical dialogue, interdisciplinary exchange, networking, mentorship, and collaboration between academic and non-academic participants.

Call for Papers

The Organising Committee invites scholars, researchers, students, practitioners, activists, policymakers, artists, writers, and community leaders to submit papers and practice-based contributions that critically engage with the conference theme and its areas of interest.

We particularly encourage original philosophical arguments, interdisciplinary research, case studies, community-based knowledge, policy-oriented work, and practice-informed contributions that demonstrate how philosophical thinking can engage meaningfully with concrete environmental challenges.
